SPORTS
STUDENT LIFE

Sports have almost from the outset been a significant factor in the McGill student community. McGill students were pioneers in the development of North American football and ice hockey. Indeed, a composite photograph of the 1874 football contest with Harvard, considered the first time the game was played in Canada by recognizably North American rules, is arguably the single best known depiction of any McGill event. However, sports at McGill extends beyond hockey and football to include among others, basketball, skiing, swimming, synchronised swimming, fencing, wrestling, track and field, and cross-country running.
