McGill Football, The Early Years: New Exhibit at the University Archives

McGill University and the Early Years of Football, 1874-1920, Exhibit Poster.

Right on the heels of the University Archives' newest virtual exhibit on football comes a physical exhibit on McGill football. Entitled "McGill University and the Early Years of Football, 1874-1920," the exhibit examines the influence McGill University had on the development of the game of football in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through reproduction of photographs and selected magazine articles. The exhibit is located just outside the University Archives' main office (McLennan Library Building, Ground Floor, MS-60)

Remembering Remembrance Day: New Exhibit at the University Archives

The University Archives has set up a physical exhibit displaying McGill University's participation during the First World War. The exhibit focuses on the No. 7 Canadian Siege Battery, a Battery composed of 150 men, mostly all students from McGill and Macdonald College. A historical account, as well as photographs depicting the Battery training in England and several unique military badges, can be found just outside the University Archives' main office (McLennan Library Building, Ground Floor, MS-60).

New Virtual Exhibit: McGill Redman Football Team Photos from 1874 to 2000

Football fans and McGill history enthusiasts alike can browse or search the University Archives' newest virtual exhibit. Former McGill Redman football head coach Charlie Baillie collected over 100 Redman football team photos, bound them into a large photo album and kindly donated it to the University Archives, where it has been transformed into an image gallery virtual exhibit.

Dale C. Thomson Fonds added to Searchable Databases
(October 3, 2003)

Dale Cairns Thomson, who taught political science at McGill between 1973 and 1994, was a life-long researcher, professor, and political activist. The Dale C. Thomson Fonds consists of correspondence, course material, research and interview notes, articles, transcripts and grant applications pertaining to his activities as a researcher, professor, journalist and Liberal Party activist.

New Search System Added to the Guides to Archival Resources

Finding information in the Guide to Archival Resources at McGill University has been made easier thanks to a new search feature designed to search the Guide. Users type in their search term, and the search engine retrieves results containing their query.

More Digitized Images Added to Photo Collection Database
(June 18, 2003)

More digitized images have been added to the University Archives' Photo Collection database, bringing the total amount of searchable photographs to over 14 000 images. The new images include scans of 35mm slides and delicate glass slides.

This on-going digitization project aims to preserve and improve access to the University Archives' vast collection of historical photographs.

McGill Souvernirs and Memorabilia on Display at the University Archives
(April 11, 2003)

From a plush pillow emblazoned with the McGill coat-of-arms and a piggy bank in the shape of that ubiquitous McGill bird, the martlet, to a series of McGill pins and a programme describing the grand opening of the Physics and Engineering Buildings on February 24, 1893, the University Archives has set up a display showcasing over a century's worth of McGill history through a rich and colourful collection of souvernirs and memorabilia.

The exhibit is located just outside the University Archives' main office (McLennan Library Building, Ground Floor, MS-60).

The History of McGill Installations, The Physical Display, now showing at the University Archives

In case you missed the physical exhibit on the history and tradition of Installation at McGill (at Moyse Hall during the Installation of Dr. Heather Munroe-Blum), the University Archives has set up the exhibit near to its main office. (McLennan Library Building, Ground Floor, MS-60).

Virtual Exhibit on the History of McGill Installations Launched
(February 25, 2003)

On Monday, March 10, 2003, Dr. Heather Munroe-Blum will be installed as McGill University's 16th Principal and 12th Vice-Chancellor. In honour of this event, the University Archives is pleased to present this virtual exhibit on the history and tradition of Installation at McGill University since 1829.

Entitled "...a long line of eminent and learned Principals": The History and Tradition of Installation, 1829-2003, the virtual exhibit provides a rich historical account of past Installation ceremonies, using a choice selection of photographs, programs, and key governance documents to illustrate this McGill ceremonial tradition.
